Destiny 2: Heresy Launches, Marking End of an Era
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Destiny 2: Heresy, the final episode of the game’s current saga, launched on Feb. 4, 2025, marking the end of a decade-long era that began with the original Destiny in 2014. The release introduces new gameplay elements and sets the stage for the upcoming Frontiers expansion model, which will replace the episodic format.
Heresy focuses on the Hive, with players likely confronting the Hive gods Savathun and Xivu Arath. The episode introduces a new roguelike-inspired activity featuring non-regenerating health and collectible upgrades. Players will also have access to powerful seasonal weapons, including a uniquely designed circular SMG.
“The draw for Heresy this time is a new activity that implements ‘roguelike’ elements,” said a senior contributor familiar with the game. “There’s also a path to ‘super’ seasonal weapons, despite crafting only being relegated to a Vault of Glass reprise.”
The episodic model, introduced in 2024, has faced criticism for its lack of compelling reasons to play and subpar narrative structure. However, hopes remain high for Heresy, which is expected to bridge the gap to the Frontiers expansion. Frontiers will introduce a new model featuring two smaller expansions and four major updates annually, replacing the seasonal format established after 2018’s Forsaken expansion.
Bungie, the developer behind Destiny 2, has faced significant challenges in recent years, including layoffs and voluntary departures. A portion of the team has also been redirected to work on Marathon, Bungie’s main priority for 2025 and beyond. Despite player demand for a Destiny 3, no such project is currently in development, with Frontiers serving as the franchise’s roadmap for the foreseeable future.
Destiny 2: Heresy is now available on all platforms. The Frontiers expansion is expected to launch later this year, though no specific release date has been announced.
