Novak Djokovic Tennis Emotions Rivalry

New Delhi, IndiaNovak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, shared his feelings of being less loved compared to rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. In an interview with Slaven Bilic, Djokovic expressed that despite his historic achievements in tennis, he has often struggled with hostile crowds and a lack of admiration.

At 38 years old, Djokovic boasts more Grand Slam titles than both Federer, who has 20, and Nadal, with 22. However, he feels that this success has not translated into the same level of support at major tournaments such as the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

“I felt like the unwanted child in the trio,” Djokovic said. “I often questioned why that was the case, and it was painful.” He noted that he attempted to change his demeanor to win over fans but found it ineffective.

Djokovic acknowledged the longstanding rivalry between Federer and Nadal, who emerged as popular figures in tennis before his rise. “They come from Switzerland and Spain… There are these orientations and affiliations,” he explained.

He also reflected on how his presence disrupted the narrative established by Federer and Nadal. “I never achieved the same level of adoration… I was the third man who boldly declared, ‘I’m going to be number one.’ Not everyone welcomed that,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Djokovic praised his relationship with both rivals, noting that it has fluctuated between frosty and friendly. “Just because someone is my biggest rival doesn’t mean I wish them harm,” he said. “I’ve always respected both Federer and Nadal and never said a single bad word about them.” Djokovic revealed he has a closer bond with Nadal.

This heartfelt revelation comes after Djokovic’s recent defeat to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the French Open, where he continues to compete for his place among tennis’ greatest legends.
