Dodgers’ Freeman Sidelined for NLCS Game 4 Due to Ankle Injury
In a surprising turn of events, All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman will not participate in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series due to a persistent ankle injury. Despite his efforts to remain active in the postseason, Freeman’s condition has led the Los Angeles Dodgers to adjust their strategy as they face their opponents.
Freeman sustained a severe sprain to his right ankle on September 26 and has since managed to appear in seven of the Dodgers’ eight postseason games. His performance, however, has been limited to singles, managing only seven hits in 27 at-bats, a stark contrast to his usual power-hitting capabilities.
With left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo set to start for the opposing team, the Dodgers have elected to field a predominantly right-handed lineup for Thursday’s game. Max Muncy will step into Freeman’s usual No. 3 spot in the batting order, while Kiké Hernández, typically a center fielder, will take over at third base. Meanwhile, Miguel Vargas will replace Freeman at first base.
The Dodgers are currently leading the seven-game series 2-1 following an 8-0 victory in Game 3 on Wednesday night. Freeman, who is a former MVP and an eight-time All-Star, has been dedicating substantial hours to treatment efforts in preparation to play. Previously, he also missed Game 4 of Los Angeles’ division series win against San Diego.
Though his participation is missed, Freeman did manage to make an impact in Game 1 of the division series against San Diego, where he contributed two hits after being listed in the lineup at the last minute.
Freeman’s teammate and catcher, Will Smith, commented on the situation, stating, “He’s in a lot of pain out there. You can see it when he’s running and all that. But he’s inspiring us as players, as a teammate. Willing to put his body on the line. It’s impressive. It gets us going. We love when he’s in there. He’s been swinging it good for us. Unfortunately, he’s not in there today, but I know he’s back in there tomorrow.”
