Dolphins Sign Running Back Alexander Mattison to Boost Backfield

MIAMI, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins have bolstered their backfield by signing veteran running back Alexander Mattison to a one-year contract, the team confirmed on Thursday. The addition comes as the Dolphins seek to enhance their rushing game after releasing Raheem Mostert earlier this offseason.
Mattison, 26, joins Miami after a season with the Las Vegas Raiders where he recorded 420 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 132 carries. He also enjoyed a productive passing game, tallying 36 receptions for 294 yards and one touchdown, marking his best season as a receiver.
Originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Mattison brings valuable experience to the Dolphins’ roster. Over the course of his career, he has accumulated 2,370 rushing yards and 718 receiving yards, scoring a total of 22 touchdowns across 89 games.
The Dolphins’ running back corps now includes De'Von Achane and Jaylen Wright alongside Mattison. The team parted ways with Mostert and allowed Jeff Wilson Jr. to enter free agency, creating an opportunity for Mattison to carve out a role as a rotational back.
Miami’s head coach Mike McDaniel indicated at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine that the team was evaluating their options in the backfield heading into training camp. Mattison’s experience and versatility could provide Miami with a solid option for short-yardage situations, especially as they look to improve their overall rushing efficiency.
Mattison’s performance in his lone starting season in 2022 with Minnesota produced career highs, including 700 rushing yards and an impressive 892 scrimmage yards. However, his efficiency dipped to 3.2 yards per carry during his time with the Raiders, highlighting the struggles of the team’s overall ground game.
As the Dolphins prepare for the 2025 season, the addition of Mattison marks a strategic step in establishing a diverse and effective running game. His role as both a reliable backup and potential short-yardage option will be critical as Miami seeks consistency in their offensive lineup.
