Ecuador Triumphs Over Hong Kong in Davis Cup
In a closely contested Davis Cup tie, Hong Kong faced a 3-2 defeat against a more experienced Ecuadorian team at the Victoria Park Tennis Stadium on Sunday. Despite the overall result, there was a moment of pride for the home supporters when Coleman Wong Chak-lam showcased his emerging talent.
The 20-year-old Wong delivered an impressive performance, defeating Andres Andrade with a clinical 6-4, 6-2 victory in the singles match. This success, however, was preceded by a straight sets defeat in the doubles match, where Wong teamed up with Kevin Wong Chun-hun. The duo could not overcome their opponents, leading to a setback for the Hong Kong team.
The day concluded with veteran Ecuadorian player Gonzalo Escobar securing a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hong Kong’s Roger Ng Ki-lung. Ng, who described this match as the most significant of his career, admitted that nerves played a role in his performance. Remarkably, Ng reminisced about his earlier days, recalling that it had been 16 years since he served as a ball boy at a Hong Kong Davis Cup event.
The competition began with the two teams tied at 1-1, following Coleman Wong’s singles win the previous Saturday, which balanced out an earlier loss by 15-year-old Jack Cheng. Despite the end result, the performances of the young Hong Kong players indicated a promising future for the team.
