Ekaterina Alexandrova Defeats Diana Shnaider to Reach Ningbo Final
Ningbo, China — Ekaterina Alexandrova secured her spot in the Ningbo Open final by defeating compatriot Diana Shnaider 6-3, 6-4 in a match lasting 1 hour and 32 minutes. This victory marked a significant turnaround for Alexandrova, who had previously lost to Shnaider in the Monterrey final two months ago.
The match took place on a rainy night in Ningbo, but unlike their previous encounter, this time Alexandrova was fresh off her debut in the WTA top 10. She entered the match with a determined mindset, eager to avenge her earlier loss and showcase her skills.
Alexandrova was challenged during the match, with Shnaider earning ten break points, yet Alexandrova showed resilience. After allowing Shnaider to break back when she was ahead 5-1 in the first set, she quickly regained control to close it out. The second set saw Shnaider again attempt a comeback by saving match points, but Alexandrova was able to seal the win with a forehand winner on her sixth match point.
After the match, Alexandrova expressed her focus on enjoying the final on Sunday against Elena Rybakina, against whom she holds a 3-1 record. “Honestly, I have no expectations,” she stated. “I’ll go on court tomorrow and enjoy the atmosphere and the match. I’ll try to do my best.”
Elena Rybakina advanced to the final after defeating second-seeded Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-2. Rybakina, known for her powerful serve, struck ten aces in her semifinal match, which lasted 89 minutes. She appears eager to reclaim her form after facing multiple semifinal hurdles in recent months.
As both players prepare for the final on October 18, 2025, their previous encounters will play a crucial role in shaping the stakes. A win for Alexandrova would secure her second title of the year and the sixth overall in her career.
