A plane reporting an issue with its landing gear has landed safely at Newcastle Airport in New South Wales after three hours of circling the runway.

It’s thought the plane, believed to be a Beech B-200 Super King, was carrying up to five people including two crew members.

The pilots stayed in the air after reporting the equipment failure just after 9am, trying to burn fuel before attempting to land.

Emergency services, including multiple fire engines and ambulances, were on standby at the scene.

Police confirmed they had been called about the issue at about 9.30 am.

"Emergency services were called to Newcastle Airport following reports of an aircraft with mechanical issues," a spokesperson said. "No further details are known at this stage."

It’s believed the plane was originally scheduled to make a 26-minute flight from Port Macquarie.

Images showed the plane, with landing gear apparently not deployed, at a standstill on the tarmac.

Passengers on board are believed to have suffered air sickness and stress.
