Christian McCaffrey, the highly regarded running back for the San Francisco 49ers, will not participate in the upcoming Thursday night game against the Seattle Seahawks. McCaffrey continues his recovery from calf and Achilles tendinitis, which has sidelined him since Week 2 of the NFL season. This Thursday marks the earliest opportunity for McCaffrey to be activated from Injured Reserve (IR).

“His plan is to continue his rehab, and every day you try to push the rehab more and more each day,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan during a press conference. Despite his absence, there is increasing optimism that McCaffrey will soon rejoin the lineup for the defending NFC champions as he ramps up his return efforts.

McCaffrey’s absence has been felt strongly by the 49ers. He has an impressive record, having handled 2,205 rushing yards, 20 rushing touchdowns, 119 catches, 1,028 receiving yards, and 11 touchdown receptions over 27 regular-season games with San Francisco. He joined the team through a marquee trade with the Carolina Panthers in October 2022.

In the meantime, running back Jason Mason has emerged as a surprising asset for the 49ers, managing to tally 536 rushing yards, which ranks him second in the league entering Week 6. His performance helps to somewhat fill the void left by McCaffrey.

The 49ers, standing at a 2-3 record, face a crucial divisional matchup against the 3-2 Seattle Seahawks on “Thursday Night Football.” As they approach this contest, San Francisco aims to overcome their current position in the NFC West.

Adding to the 49ers’ challenges, safety Talanoa Hufanga is expected to miss the Week 6 game against the Seahawks due to torn ligaments in his right wrist, sustained during their 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. According to Shanahan, “It’s a high ankle sprain, so usually about a month,” though how long he will remain on IR is not yet certain.

Additionally, the team has placed rookie safety Malik Mustapha in line to start in place of Hufanga. The team also lists several players on injury reports, prompting potential adjustments to the lineup.

The 49ers hope for McCaffrey’s timely return, ideally before or after their Week 9 bye, as all-inclusive efforts are focused on maintaining competitiveness in their drive for this NFL season.
