49ers Edge Rams in Thrilling Overtime Showdown

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 26-23 in a thrilling overtime matchup at SoFi Stadium on October 2, 2025. The game concluded on a defensive stop during a crucial fourth-and-1 play, securing the 49ers’ victory and pushing their record to 4-1.
Rams coach Sean McVay opted to go for the win instead of attempting a field goal, but the 49ers’ defense held firm, stopping Rams running back Kyren Williams just shy of the goal line. McVay later expressed regret about not taking the field goal, noting, ‘It was a bad call by me. I put our players in a tough spot.’
49ers quarterback Mac Jones was instrumental in the win, throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns, while Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford amassed 389 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Jones showed off his efficiency, completing 28 of 37 passes on short throws, a strategy that helped counter the Rams’ strong pass rush.
Kendrick Bourne had a standout performance for the 49ers, recording 10 receptions for 142 yards, a career-high for the veteran receiver. ‘We knew we had to attack the Rams’ secondary quickly and Bourne executed perfectly,’ Jones said after the game.
Both teams faced injury issues, with 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy sidelined due to a toe injury. In his absence, Jones stepped up, demonstrating leadership under pressure. ‘We’ve got to keep finding ways to win,’ Jones stated. ‘Every game brings its own challenges.’
The 49ers will head to Tampa Bay next week for another critical matchup, while the Rams look to regroup ahead of their bye week.
