EuroLeague Game Postponed Due to Severe Weather Conditions
Athens, Greece — The EuroLeague game between Olympiacos Piraeus and Fenerbahçe Beko Istanbul scheduled for Thursday has been postponed due to severe weather conditions. Heavy rainfall across Athens created unsafe conditions, forcing officials to cancel the Round 14 matchup.
Storm Byron struck the capital earlier in the day, resulting in significant flooding near the Peace and Friendship Stadium, where water infiltrated parts of the arena. The decision to postpone the game was made after consultation with local authorities, including Ioannis Vroutsis, the Alternate Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports.
Both teams, currently with an 8-5 record in the EuroLeague, were set for an exciting showdown, but weather conditions proved too dangerous for play. The postponement was officially confirmed by the Athens club, which stated, “Today’s game against Fenerbahçe was postponed following a relevant decision by the Alternate Minister.”
EuroLeague Basketball officials will work with the affected teams to identify suitable dates for rescheduling the game. This postponement poses a significant scheduling challenge for both teams, who must balance their calendars with domestic league commitments as well.
The EuroLeague highlighted that this situation reflects the priority of safety for players and fans, even amid high-stakes competition. Further details regarding the new date for the matchup will be provided in the coming days.
