Mike Ford Atlanta Falcons Signing News

Atlanta, GA — The Atlanta Falcons signed cornerback Mike Ford to a two-year, $4 million contract on Monday, March 12, 2025, to enhance their special teams and defensive depth. Ford returns to the Falcons after a successful stint in 2022, helping the team on both coverage and return units.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported the details of the deal, noting it could effectively act as a one-year pact with a team option for the second year. Ford, 29, previously played 17 games for the Falcons in 2022, starting two at cornerback.

Last season, Ford had been with the Cleveland Browns, where he continued to showcase his skills as a capable special teams performer. His previous tenure with the Falcons saw him excel in the gunner role, logging 83 percent of the special teams snaps, highlighting his importance in that area.

“Mike brings a wealth of experience and a strong work ethic that bolsters our special teams,” Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said. “We’re excited to have him back in the fold as we prepare for the new season.”

While Ford may not crack the top five on the depth chart for cornerbacks, his impact on special teams is expected to be significant. His solid reputation as a gunner is complemented by his ability to fill in as needed in the secondary.

Despite some concerns raised during his last stint regarding missed tackles on special teams, team officials believe that his previous performance was largely an anomaly. Ford’s proven track record suggests he can excel in his role once again.

The Falcons’ special teams did not go unnoticed, as they are actively seeking to return some of their key players. Falcons’ followers are hopeful that star special teamer KhaDarel Hodge may also return, creating formidable options for 2025.

Ford’s signing comes just as the NFL’s free agency contact period kicks off, with teams engaging in significant roster changes and enhancements across the league. The Falcons were also recently noted for addressing their pass rush, having signed former San Francisco 49ers edge rusher Leonard Floyd to a one-year deal worth $10 million.

The introduction of Ford and Floyd reflects the Falcons’ strategic focus on strengthening both their special teams and defensive units. As the NFL off-season unfolds, Falcons fans will be keenly watching for further developments in their team’s roster.
