No Familial Connection Between NFL’s Devin and Mike Singletary

In the National Football League (NFL), it’s not uncommon for players to follow the footsteps of their successful parents. Many current stars, such as Christian McCaffrey and Pat Surtain II, have fathers who once played in the league. However, this trend does not apply to Devin Singletary, the running back for the New York Giants, despite his surname suggesting a possible familial link to former Chicago Bears linebacker and Hall of Famer Mike Singletary.

The Sporting News has clarified that there is no familial relationship between Devin Singletary and Mike Singletary. The only connection they share is their last name. Devin was born and raised in Florida, attending American Heritage School in Delray Beach, Florida, where he played high school football. He later committed to playing at Florida Atlantic University.

Conversely, Mike Singletary hails from Houston, Texas, and remains in the Lone Star State. He serves as the head coach at Trinity Christian Academy in Addison, Texas. Although Mike has children who have pursued football, none are related to Devin. Mike Singletary’s son, Matt, played college football at Baylor University and California Polytechnic State University as a defensive end in the late 2000s.

Adding to the intrigue, Devin Singletary’s football lineage comes from his father, Devonn Singletary, who also played the sport at Norfolk State University. Devonn was affectionately known by the nickname “Motor,” a moniker now carried by Devin in the NFL.

Interestingly, the surname Singletary appears elsewhere in NFL history. Bill Singletary played for the New York Giants in 1974, and Reggie Singletary spent five years with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1986 to 1990. However, there are no verified connections among these individuals, with all sharing the surname purely by coincidence.
