Former Socceroo Ernie Campbell has been playing football relentlessly since he was 12 years old, embarking on a lifelong journey through the sport. Now, at 74 years old, Campbell is gearing up for another international football tournament, showcasing his enduring passion for the game.

Having made his mark in the football world since 1965 as a young talent at Chelsea, Campbell’s career saw him represent the Australian national team at the prestigious FIFA World Cup in 1974. Fast forward 50 years, and Campbell is set to join forces with the Australian over 70s team, known as the Oldyroos, as they prepare to compete at the Veteran’s World Cup in Cardiff.

Joining Campbell on the team is the oldest member, 79-year-old Robin Hall from Bathurst, who brings a wealth of experience to the squad. Despite playing alongside teammates with a significant age gap, Hall finds immense joy in the camaraderie and competitiveness of the over 70s games.

The team, spearheaded by player-manager Keith Pierce, operates independently without official sporting body affiliation, symbolizing the grassroots spirit of the sport. Pierce, a driving force behind fostering older men’s football, established OASIS to provide playing opportunities for individuals over 60.

While Football Australia acknowledges resource limitations in supporting senior football initiatives, Pierce’s dedication has propelled the team to international success, as they clinched a bronze medal at last year’s Veteran’s World Cup in Thailand, showcasing the resilience and determination of the seasoned players.

Australians over 15 years old are active participants in football, yet the proportion of male players over 65 is notably low, reflecting a broader trend towards lower-risk sports among aging populations. Dr. Lyndell Bruce of Deakin University underlines the physical challenges faced by older athletes, emphasizing the importance of tailored sports programs for varying age groups.

Pierce, undeterred by age, sets his sights on competing in the newly introduced over 80s category at the forthcoming world cup event in Japan, embodying the unwavering spirit of lifelong football enthusiasts. Campbell echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and adaptability in prolonging one’s sporting journey.
