Former Alabama Assistant Likely New Head Coach at James Madison
HARRISONBURG, Va. — The head coaching position at James Madison University has become highly sought after with the recent departure of Bob Chesney. Sources indicate that Billy Napier, a former Alabama assistant and Florida head coach, is under consideration to take over the program.
Chesney successfully led James Madison to an impressive 11-1 record this season, culminating in a Sun Belt Championship game appearance against Troy. His exit comes after a strong four-year stint at Louisiana, where he achieved back-to-back conference titles and an overall record of 40-12.
Although Napier faced struggles during his time at Florida, finishing with a 22-23 record, he previously demonstrated his ability to win at the Group of 5 level. His coaching resume may appeal to James Madison, especially after leading Louisiana to three consecutive seasons with ten or more wins.
As the Dukes prepare for their championship clash this Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPN, Napier’s potential hiring could elevate their program further, especially if they earn a College Football Playoff berth.
