Former B.c. Cabinet Minister Leaves Ndp Caucus Over Antisemitism Concerns

Former B.C. cabinet minister Selina Robinson has made a significant decision to depart from the B.C. NDP caucus, citing concerns over antisemitism within her party. Robinson, who represents the riding of Coquitlam-Maillardville and is a prominent Jewish figure, expressed feeling unsupported and singled out for her heritage.

During her announcement at the B.C. Legislature, Robinson highlighted instances of antisemitism and the lack of proper response from the B.C. NDP caucus, leading her to step back from her party affiliation.

Robinson’s resignation comes after a controversial statement she made about the foundation of Israel being criticized, leading to her departure from the cabinet last month. The former minister expressed frustration over what she perceives as a double standard in how different groups are treated within the B.C. NDP.

Within the NDP caucus, Robinson pointed out specific remarks from fellow members, including Mable Elmore and Ravi Kahlon, that she found to be hurtful to the Jewish community. She also mentioned her attempts to initiate dialogue between Jewish, Palestinian, and Arab communities, which were reportedly met with resistance.

Despite previous commitments to address antisemitism and anti-Islamophobia within the party, Robinson felt that her concerns were not taken seriously. Premier David Eby‘s response to certain incidents, such as the consideration of evicting a Jewish organization from a university campus, further fueled Robinson’s decision to leave the caucus.

Robinson’s departure has sparked discussions within the B.C. NDP about addressing antisemitism and promoting dialogue between diverse communities to foster understanding and inclusivity. The move reflects a growing awareness of the need for greater sensitivity and unity in political spheres.
