Former Eagles Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson Signs with Chicago Bears
CHICAGO, IL — C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the former Philadelphia Eagles safety, has joined the Chicago Bears, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This move marks Gardner-Johnson’s fourth team since March.
After winning Super Bowl LIX with the Eagles, Gardner-Johnson was traded to the Houston Texans to create salary cap space. He expressed his discontent, saying on a podcast that the Eagles were “scared of a competitor.” However, his time in Houston was short-lived.
The 27-year-old safety was released by the Texans on September 23, just three games into the season. Reports indicated that he had issues with his role and had been vocal about his dissatisfaction with teammates.
On October 7, Gardner-Johnson joined the Baltimore Ravens‘ practice squad but faced another setback. He was released in an “amicable mutual decision” on October 14, just a week later.
Now, Gardner-Johnson will try to revitalize his career with the Bears. Over his seven seasons in the NFL, he has recorded 18 interceptions and defended 51 passes. He was a standout player for the Eagles last season, amassing six interceptions during their Super Bowl run.
Gardner-Johnson will reunite with Dennis Allen, the Bears’ defensive coordinator, who was his head coach at the New Orleans Saints when the team drafted him in 2019. This connection may play a crucial role in helping Gardner-Johnson find his footing in Chicago.
