Former News Limited CEO Kim Williams to Replace Ita Buttrose as ABC Chair
Former News Limited CEO Kim Williams has been announced as the endorsed candidate to replace Ita Buttrose as the new ABC chair by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Williams, who has held several notable positions in Australian media and arts organizations, will succeed Buttrose when her term ends in March. Williams, who was nominated by an independent panel, will serve as ABC chair for five years.
During a press conference, Prime Minister Albanese described Williams as a “perfect fit for the role,” highlighting his extensive experience in running media companies and arts organizations, as well as his involvement in sports as a former AFL Commissioner. Albanese praised Williams’ intellectual depth, energy, insatiable curiosity, and diverse range of passions.
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland joined the press conference and paid tribute to Ita Buttrose, acknowledging her as a “giant of the media and business worlds.” Rowland commended Buttrose for her steady leadership over the past five years and her unwavering support for the ABC’s independence. She emphasized that Buttrose was the right chair for the right time.
Kim Williams has an impressive professional background, with previous roles including chairman of the Sydney Opera House Trust, CEO of News Limited, and executive positions at the Australian Film Commission, Southern Star Entertainment, and Foxtel. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, film, and television industries, Williams was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2006.
The government expressed its gratitude to Ita Buttrose for her service and dedication during her tenure as ABC chair. Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the importance of having a safe and experienced leader at the helm of the national broadcaster, stating that Kim Williams is eminently qualified to provide stability and leadership to the institution.
