French Striker Anthony Modeste Bids Farewell to Al Ahly After Contract Expiration
French striker Anthony Modeste has officially departed African champions Al Ahly after his contract with the club expired.
Modeste, formerly of Borussia Dortmund, joined Al Ahly in the summer on a free transfer but had a modest spell in Cairo, contributing six goals and four assists in a total of 31 games across competitions.
The 36-year-old’s highlight with Al Ahly was securing the CAF Champions League title, alongside victories in the Egypt Cup and Egypt Super Cup, in addition to claiming the Club World Cup bronze medal.
Notably, Modeste scored a late winner in the Egypt Super Cup final against Modern Future, etching his name in the hearts of the Al Ahly faithful.
Despite the opportunity for Al Ahly to extend his deal for another season, the club opted to part ways with the Frenchman as they set their sights on recruiting a new striker during the upcoming transfer window.
In his farewell message, Modeste expressed gratitude to the club and its supporters, acknowledging the fans’ unwavering backing and declaring his pride in sporting the Al Ahly badge.
The departure of Modeste leaves Al Ahly with a striker roster comprising only Wessam Abou Ali and Mahmoud Kahraba for the remainder of the season.
Al Ahly, managed by Marcel Koller, will face Tala’ea El Gaish in their next league fixture. The defending champions sit second in the standings, trailing Pyramids by 14 points with several games in hand.
Injury concerns persist for Al Ahly, with Percy Tau, Omar Kamal, and Ahmed Nabil Koka sidelined, while Kahraba has been omitted from the squad temporarily due to disciplinary reasons.
