It looks like there could be a thrilling matchup brewing between Alex Pereira and Dricus Du Plessis in the near future. Pereira recently shared that he plans to drop back to middleweight, which caught a lot of attention, especially since Du Plessis had just defended his title against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305.

In a nail-biting showdown at the RAC Arena, Du Plessis managed to submit Adesanya in the fourth round, securing his first title defense since winning the middleweight belt. This win brought his MMA record to an impressive 22 wins and 2 losses.

As soon as Pereira announced his intentions to return to 185 pounds, fans began buzzing about a possible duel with Du Plessis. However, Du Plessis expressed some reservations about Pereira cutting weight, suggesting that it might lead to excuses if he loses. He pointed out, “If he wants to come down, great! But we’ll hear the excuses that he cut too much weight.”

Du Plessis feels that Pereira should stay in the light heavyweight class, where he seems strong and competitive. He said, “Stay at 205. Fight your fight against Khalil Rountree and enjoy it.”

While Du Plessis is focused on making the most of his reign at middleweight, he’s open to the idea of a fight with Pereira at 205 pounds if the UFC thinks it makes sense. He believes that to be considered among the greats in the sport, he first needs to dominate his division.
