(MEXICO) — The organizers of Fyre Festival 2 announced on April 16 that the event has been postponed, leaving ticket holders in uncertainty. The festival was originally set to take place from May 30 to June 2 on Isla Mujeres, Mexico, but complications regarding permits have arisen.

Billy McFarland, the mastermind behind the infamous Fyre Festival that collapsed in 2017, is attempting to revive the festival concept with a second iteration, advertised with the slogan “Fyre Festival 2 is real.” Tickets for the festival started at $1,400, with high-tier options reaching up to $1.1 million.

The announcement of the postponement came via a message sent to ticket holders, which read, “The event has been postponed and a new date will be announced. We have issued you a refund. Once the new date is announced, at that time, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule.” This message left many awaiting further details on their investments.

McFarland stated in a previous announcement, “I’m sure many people think I’m crazy for doing this again. But I feel I’d be crazy not to do it again.” He expressed his belief that after years of reflection, the planning team was ready to deliver an enjoyable experience filled with music, art, and culinary delights.

However, local authorities have claimed there was no official approval for such an event. Bernardo Cueto, the tourism secretary for Quintana Roo, the state where Isla Mujeres is located, confirmed over the phone that his office had not received any applications for permits for Fyre Festival 2. The Playa Del Carmen government also issued a statement declaring that “no event with that name will be held in our city.”

In response to these claims, McFarland shared what he described as evidence of communications with local officials, asserting that they had been working to secure the necessary permissions since March 5. He posted documents on social media supporting his insistence that all procedures were being followed for the festival to occur.

The planned festival was pitched as an “electrifying celebration of music, arts, cuisine, comedy, fashion, gaming, sports, and treasure hunting,” with the intention of creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

As the situation developed, ticketing platforms reported that all ticket types were now marked as sold out on the festival’s website, further complicating the status of the event. Organizers indicated that they might be looking at new locations rather than Isla Mujeres due to the apparent lack of government support.

The original Fyre Festival in 2017 was a notorious failure that became emblematic of the pitfalls of luxury festival culture, resulting in numerous lawsuits and McFarland’s imprisonment. He is currently seeking redemption through Fyre Festival 2, positioning it as a chance to restore his reputation and atone for past mistakes.

Any updates regarding the new date or location for Fyre Festival 2 remain forthcoming, as organizers continue to reassure ticket holders that the festival will ultimately push forward.
