COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina‘s offense is under scrutiny as they prepare for their matchup against No. 23 Missouri on Saturday night. Offensive coordinator Mike Shula has seen his team struggle to find consistency, with only two successful scoring drives in their first game of the season before reverting to mistakes in subsequent matches.

The Gamecocks have scored just five offensive touchdowns through three games, leaving them at the bottom of the SEC in both total offense and rushing statistics. Shula acknowledged the team’s challenges, attributing them to turnovers, penalties, and execution issues.

“If all of us knew the exact answer on all that, we’d all be making a lot more money,” Shula said during a media session on Wednesday. He has urged players to analyze each play individually, emphasizing the need for improvement in the red zone and overall execution.

Starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers missed significant time during their previous games due to injury, which has further complicated the offense’s performance. However, reports suggest he is likely to return for the upcoming contest against Missouri.

Shula praised backup quarterback Luke Doty, saying he is prepared to step in if necessary. He remarked on Doty’s strong communication skills and noted that the coaching staff would adjust their game plan to suit whichever quarterback is playing.

As the Gamecocks work to correct their issues, Shula highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum and moving the ball forward. “Negative plays kill you,” he stated, reiterating the need for sustained drives to build confidence.

With the struggles evident on the field, there is mounting pressure on both Shula and head coach Shane Beamer to find solutions quickly. The upcoming game against Missouri will be telling for the direction of South Carolina’s season, as their fans expect to see significant improvement.
