George Kittle Draws Inspiration from Parents’ Creativity and Support
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle garners motivation through the creative influence and support of his parents, Bruce Kittle and Jan Krieger. This well-established routine involves reading a letter from his father, Bruce, before every game to remind him of his accomplishments and the journey ahead.
In a 2020 interview, George discussed the evolution of these letters from motivational speeches to a cherished pregame tradition. “It connects my life and childhood to every single game,” he stated. Bruce, a former offensive lineman and coach, shared that the letters are crafted to keep George grounded and focused, describing them as a way to ensure he remains “the guy he needs to be for his team.”
Bruce Kittle made his mark in football as co-captain of the 1981 Big Ten Championship team for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Despite a significant knee injury, he contributed to their participation in the 1982 Rose Bowl. Bruce’s dedication to sports extended into his coaching career at the University of Oklahoma and his alma mater, Iowa.
Jan Krieger, George’s mother, is also an accomplished athlete, having excelled in softball and basketball at Drake University. Her influence on George and his sister, Emma, has been profound, as sports have been integral to their lives. Jan’s creative spirit permeates their family, with photography being a shared interest she’s cultivated with her children.
George’s sister, Emma, has carried on the family’s athletic tradition with notable achievements in volleyball and basketball during high school, eventually playing volleyball at the University of Oklahoma. Emma credits their parents for being integral to their sporting pursuits and later transitioned her career to yoga instruction, focusing on programs for NFL players.
Bruce’s academic and professional achievements are equally impressive. He is a practicing lawyer, having graduated with high distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law and earning various licensures to practice law. He has served in roles such as a mediator for the Iowa Peace Institute and as a criminal defense attorney.
Both George and Emma have publicly acknowledged their parents’ impact on their lives, reflecting on their unwavering support and encouragement. Jan’s love for photography continues, with her work showcased in galleries, and Bruce’s influence remains present through their joint audio show “Hidden Pearls,” where the family engages in discussions on wellness, family, and football.
George has often expressed gratitude towards his parents, highlighting their role in shaping his values and character. On Mother’s Day in 2021, he celebrated Jan’s unconditional love and support. Similarly, on Father’s Day, he thanked Bruce for his wisdom in both life and football.
In their personal lives, both George and Emma have chosen partners who share their sporting background. George married Claire, a former Iowa Hawkeyes basketball player, in 2019, officiated by Bruce. Meanwhile, Emma wed Cody Ponce, a former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher, in 2023.
