German Tennis Player Quarterfinals Grass Tournament

NÜRNBERG, Germany — German tennis player Simon Engel, ranked 281st in the world, stunned fans by reaching the quarterfinals of a major grass tournament. Engel defeated American Alex Michelsen, ranked 34th, with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I just wanted to show what I can do, but you don’t expect much at your first grass tournament ever. It’s incredible how this is going,” Engel said after his victory.

At just 17 years old, Engel’s achievement marks a significant moment in tennis history, as he is the youngest player to reach a quarterfinal since Boris Becker did so 40 years ago at Wimbledon. Unlike Becker, who went on to win the tournament and six Grand Slam titles overall, Engel is focused on enjoying the game at this stage.

“I just want to stay positive. It’s great to hear about statistics, but I want to have fun and play my tennis,” Engel remarked. Going into Monday, he is set to rise to around 230 in the world rankings, potentially qualifying him for the upcoming US Open.

Engel’s performance against Michelsen was extraordinary, as he won 100 percent of his first-service points and faced no break points. He aims to secure a place in New York through his next three tournaments.

He will face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, ranked 29th, in the quarterfinals on Friday. Despite Auger-Aliassime being the heavy favorite, Engel remains optimistic. “Big name, big player. I can’t wait. I’m just excited for the chance to play against him,” he expressed.

Should Engel advance, he might even meet Germany’s top player, Alexander Zverev, in the finals. “I watch how he serves and stretches up high; I want to achieve that too,” Engel said about preparing for a possible showdown.

Regardless of what happens in the quarterfinals, German tennis fans have much to look forward to with Engel, whose story may just be beginning.
