Gibson Searches for Back to the Future’s Iconic ES-345 Guitar
LOS ANGELES, CA — The search intensifies for the original Gibson ES-345 guitar featured in the classic 1985 film “Back to the Future.” Today marks Back to the Future Day, celebrating the film’s 40th anniversary. Gibson Guitars announced a special collection honoring the movie, sparking renewed interest in the fabled instrument.
The new Back to the Future Collection includes limited-edition ES-345 models produced by Gibson Custom and Epiphone, alongside film-themed apparel. Mark Agnesi, Director of Brand Experience at Gibson, shared his excitement: “Bringing this guitar to life has been a passion project for many years, and it’s incredibly exciting to finally see it become a reality.”
In the film, Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, famously uses the Cherry Red Gibson ES-345 during an electrifying performance of Chuck Berry‘s “Johnny B. Goode” at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. Despite previous attempts to recover the guitar during filming of the sequel, its location remains unknown.
Fans worldwide are actively participating in the search, submitting tips that have helped narrow down the possibilities. Gibson is pursuing several promising leads to authenticate what many consider the most significant guitar in cinematic history.
Notably, the ES-345 was released after the film’s 1955 setting, debuting in 1959. Its visual appeal made it a fitting choice for the movie. A masterfully crafted homage, the Back to the Future 1955 ES-345 Collector’s Edition features a thinline, three-ply body of maple-poplar-maple and other authentic details, maintaining the essence of the beloved guitar.
Agnesi remarked, “This guitar inspired me and countless others to pick up playing in the first place.” The collection serves both as a tribute to the film and as a reminder of the strong connection between music and cinema.
As the search continues, guitar enthusiasts and fans alike watch closely for updates on the iconic instrument that holds a special place in film history.
