Gilberto Mora Injured, Undergoes Surgery Ahead of Key Matches
Tijuana, Mexico – Gilberto Mora, a 17-year-old midfielder for Club Tijuana, underwent successful surgery on his left hand after suffering a fracture during training on Thursday, just days before his team’s crucial match against Pumas in the Apertura 2025.
The injury occurred when Mora fell awkwardly while contesting a ball. The club confirmed he suffered a fracture to the third metacarpal, which required immediate surgical intervention.
“Gilberto will reintegrate to training based on his recovery progress,” Tijuana said in a statement released on their social media channels.
Mora has been a standout player for Tijuana this season, participating in 11 matches and starting in 10. He had impressive performances earlier in the Copa del Mundo Sub-20, contributing significantly to Mexico’s journey in the tournament.
As a result of the injury, Mora will miss the upcoming game against Pumas and other potential matches during the regular season. Tijuana sits in ninth place with 21 points, just two points shy of the sixth place necessary for direct qualification to the quarter-finals. His absence could be a significant setback as Tijuana aims for a strong finish in the league.
Despite his surgery being successful, club officials have not provided an official timeline for his recovery. However, they estimate a rehabilitation period of approximately six to eight weeks, potentially keeping him out until the Play-In stage.
The situation is equally concerning for the Mexican national team, as Mora was considered a candidate for upcoming friendly matches. Team manager Javier Aguirre will need to evaluate other options given Mora’s injury.
Club Tijuana hopes to advance in the tournament, and if successful, there is optimism that Mora could return to play if his recovery allows.
