Glenn Close Reveals Robert Redford as Her Best On-Screen Kiss
NEW YORK — Actress Glenn Close revealed that Robert Redford was her “best on-screen kiss” during an appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live!” on Thursday. The 77-year-old star, known for her roles in films like “Fatal Attraction” and “The Natural,” shared the anecdote during the show’s “Plead the Fifth” segment.
When host Andy Cohen asked Close about her most memorable on-screen kiss, she smiled and replied, “Robert Redford… in ‘The Natural.’” The 1984 sports drama featured Close as Iris Gaines, the former girlfriend of Redford’s character, Roy Hobbs, a baseball prodigy who overcomes adversity to achieve greatness.
Close expressed regret that the kiss was brief, recalling, “I only got to kiss him once.” She added, “Maybe we did two takes,” before joking, “But I also threw him out of my apartment in that movie. But I ended up with him.”
Cohen noted that Close earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in “The Natural,” one of eight Academy Award nominations she has received throughout her career. When asked which of her performances she believed was most deserving of an Oscar, Close quipped, “All of them!” to laughter and applause from the audience.
Close also discussed her role in the 2020 film “Hillbilly Elegy,” for which she earned her most recent Oscar nomination. She played Bonnie “Mamaw” Vance, the grandmother of Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, whose memoir inspired the movie. During an appearance on “The View” earlier this week, Close praised Vance’s family for their generosity during filming.
“We all met members of the family. We all sat with them individually, you know, one-on-one,” Close said. “For me, with Mamaw, I’d say, ‘How did she walk into a room? How did she sit? How did she smoke? How did she laugh? How did she change the chemistry?’ So that was, you know, the family was very generous with their time.”
Close’s candid revelations and reflections on her career provided a glimpse into her decades-long journey in Hollywood, marked by memorable performances and iconic on-screen moments.
