Detroit, MI — Gleyber Torres reached out to his longtime friend, Gio Urshela, as he considered free agency options. The 28-year-old second baseman wanted trusted advice before deciding on his MLB future. “I really believe in Gio,” Torres stated on June 25. “He’s the godfather of my son, and whatever advice he has for me, I’m going to take advantage of it.”

This call influenced Torres’ decision to sign a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers after spending seven seasons with the New York Yankees. He was seeking both a lucrative deal and a reliable chance to win the World Series. Urshela, who now plays for the Oakland Athletics, assured Torres that the Tigers had what it takes to contend for a championship.

“He explained everything to me,” said Torres. Urshela’s insights were based on his positive experiences in Detroit, even after being part of a team that underwent a rough start. The Tigers have been performing well since August 2024, boasting a .653 winning percentage.

Torres appreciates the Tigers’ culture. “When you have a really good clubhouse that’s young and together, it makes a big difference,” he said. He and Urshela have known each other since 2017, after facing off in the minor leagues. Their friendship deepened during their time together with the Yankees from 2019 to 2021.

Today, Torres and Urshela co-own a baseball training facility in Tampa, Florida. “He’s a gamer,” Urshela said Tuesday, “He likes to win.” This determination to succeed at all costs motivated Torres when weighing his contract offers. Ultimately, the competitive nature and strong resources of the Tigers won him over.

In 2025, Torres is not just another player but a key contributor to the Tigers’ dominance in the league. He enjoys playing under manager A.J. Hinch, praising his leadership and strategy throughout games. As of now, Torres is emerging as a top performer in the American League, boasting a .280 batting average, seven home runs, and an .803 OPS.

“Everything is so good,” Torres concluded of his experience with the Tigers, emphasizing the importance of his conversation with Urshela. The friendship and the newfound team environment have played crucial roles in shaping his career trajectory in Detroit.
