Global Fight League Cancels Inaugural Event Amid Financial Troubles

LOS ANGELES, April 11, 2025 — The Global Fight League (GFL), a new entrant in the mixed martial arts (MMA) arena, has canceled its highly anticipated inaugural event set for May 24-25, 2025, due to financial difficulties after an investor failed to meet obligations. The announcement has raised concerns among fans and analysts regarding the promotion’s viability.

Founded by Darren Owen, GFL aimed to innovate the sport with a unique team-based concept featuring experienced fighters, including former UFC champion Tyron Woodley. However, with the cancellation news, skepticism around the league’s future has emerged, especially as the event drew nearer.

“I’m working on a solution. My main investor didn’t fulfill his April obligation which has caused a problem,” Owen stated in a message to Uncrowned. Additionally, I don’t foresee the event taking place in California, but we absolutely will keep pushing forward.”

The California State Athletic Commission confirmed the cancellation shortly after the announcement, further contributing to the uncertainty surrounding the GFL’s future events. The inaugural fight card was expected to showcase a total of 62 fighters, many of whom were set to return to the octagon after long absences. Notable matchups included Urijah Faber against Renan Barao and Benson Henderson facing Anthony Pettis.

As excitement grew from a draft held in January 2025, where Team Dubai selected the 43-year-old Woodley as the first pick, the recent financial struggles have dampened spirits significantly. Reports indicate that the odds of the GFL successfully hosting its inaugural event have plummeted from even money to +1200.

Industry experts express concerns about the long-term sustainability of the GFL, particularly due to the aging average age of its fighters, approximately 40, raising doubts about appeal and longevity. The team format has faced challenges in the past as well, most notably with the International Fight League (IFL), which ultimately dissolved.

“I think we’re going to have to push the dates to June 15/16. I’ll confirm ASAP. It’s been a frustrating week, but I think there’s a solution in place,” Owen assured, despite repeated use of tentative phrases fueling doubts about the promotion’s readiness.
