Education
Jonathan attended the University of Port Harcourt, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in zoology in 1981, a master’s degree in hydrobiology and fisheries biology in 1985, and a doctorate in zoology in 1999. He also taught at the Rivers State College of Education from 1983 to 1993.
Career
Jonathan began his political career in 1999, when he was elected Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. He became Governor of Bayelsa State in 2005. In 2007, he was elected Vice President of Nigeria under President Umaru Yar'Adua. Jonathan became President of Nigeria in 2010 upon the death of Yar’Adua.
As President of Nigeria, Jonathan implemented a number of reforms, including a tax reform program that increased the state’s revenue.
