Grizzlies Seek Support from Edey and Jackson During Morant’s Absence
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies are grappling with a rocky start to the season, currently sitting at 4-10 as they face the absence of star guard Ja Morant. Coach Tuomas Iisalo is calling on Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr. to step up in Morant’s absence, which has left the team in need of a reliable scoring and playmaking presence.
The Grizzlies have struggled without Morant, who typically serves as the team’s focal point. Iisalo’s offensive scheme relies heavily on the ability to create separation and scoring opportunities, tasks that have become increasingly difficult with Morant sidelined. Edey, the 7-foot-4 rookie, is positioned to play a crucial role in both screening and rebounding, areas where Memphis has faced significant challenges.
In Morant’s absence due to a calf injury, the Grizzlies have found themselves lacking in offensive efficiency, ranking near the bottom in points scored per game. Statistics highlight the team’s dependency on screens to generate open looks, but ineffective hitting has resulted in stalled possessions. Iisalo stated, “Without a dominant screener like Edey, we have struggled to establish our offensive rhythm.”
Jackson Jr., the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, is also feeling the pressure. He was expected to benefit from a healthy Edey, who could take some of the attention off him in the paint. Instead, the duo has yet to find their rhythm on the court together. Jackson Jr. remarked, “We need to work together better to support each other, especially with Ja out.”
In their recent games, the Grizzlies have faced difficulties capitalizing on second-chance opportunities. The team ranks poorly in offensive rebounding, which has compounded their scoring woes. Edey’s ability on the boards could be vital, especially with Memphis lacking physicality inside. “My goal is to control the glass and create opportunities for my teammates,” Edey said.
As the team prepares for their upcoming game against the Sacramento Kings, Iisalo is tasked with finding a balanced lineup that can provide stability amidst the turmoil. The coach acknowledged the need for better execution, especially in high-pressure moments of the second half, as the Grizzlies have repeatedly faltered in fourth-quarter situations.
While Edey remains on a minutes restriction due to injuries from college, his anticipated return to full strength offers a glimmer of hope for the Grizzlies. The team believes that when Morant returns, the added presence of Edey will amplify their performance both offensively and defensively. “Ja brings the energy, but Zach can provide the physical presence we need,” Iisalo explained.
Looking ahead, the Grizzlies aim to instill a fighting spirit as they navigate this challenging stretch. The coaching staff is hopeful that Edey and Jackson Jr. can emerge as key players who will lift Memphis out of their current slump. As Jackson Jr. noted, “It’s about making the most of our opportunities and finding a way to win.”
