Guardians Rookie DeLauter Joins Playoff Roster Against Tigers
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Guardians are making headlines as they enter their AL wild-card series against the Detroit Tigers with a notable addition to their roster: 23-year-old outfielder Chase DeLauter.
Selected 16th overall in the 2022 MLB Draft, DeLauter has spent the majority of the 2025 season recovering from injuries. After undergoing surgery for a sports hernia earlier this year, he managed to perform well in Triple-A Columbus, hitting .278 with five home runs and 21 RBIs in 34 games.
Roberto Perez, the Guardians’ manager, announced the decision to include DeLauter on the roster just ahead of Game 1. This move marks a significant moment for DeLauter, who could potentially make his major league debut in these playoffs.
“We felt that adding Chase to our roster was the right move considering the playoff intensity, and we believe he can contribute,” said Perez. “He’s shown great promise in the minors and is one of the best bats we have available.”
DeLauter’s opportunities to play may come in pinch-hitting scenarios during the series against the Tigers, especially since he has displayed a knack for performance against left-handed pitchers. However, the Guardians are currently managing a crowded roster.
Despite a season marred by injuries, DeLauter has consistently demonstrated his ability at the plate. In his limited appearances for the Clippers, he showcased his skills with a .924 OPS. When asked about the potential impact on the team, Pérez emphasized the importance of his recent performance.
In Game 1 of the wild-card series, played at Progressive Field in front of a lively crowd, the Guardians faced tough opposition from the Tigers. The game highlighted the usual October intensity, but DeLauter’s place on the roster is drawing attention as fans eagerly await his first appearance.
“It’s a big deal not just for Chase, but for our team as well,” said Pérez. “He’s a young player who has worked hard to get here, and we’re excited for what lies ahead.”
The Guardians hope to capitalize on DeLauter’s potential as they aim for a deep postseason run, following a remarkable comback to clinch the AL Central. They now face the Tigers in a pivotal series, making every at-bat essential.
Wednesday’s game will continue the series where DeLauter’s prospects for playing could become clearer as the Guardians push for advancement in the playoffs.
