Gujarat University Takes Action After Attack on International Students
Following the recent attack on international students at Gujarat University, the administration has taken swift action to ensure the safety of its foreign students. According to reports by PTI, the university authorities have decided to relocate the affected students to a new hostel designated for Non-Resident Indians (NRI).
Neerja Gupta, the Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University, announced that additional security measures will be implemented, including the deployment of ex-Army personnel to enhance the hostel’s security. The decision comes after a group of individuals targeted students from various countries, including Sri Lanka and Tajikistan, over their prayer practices.
Gupta mentioned that immediate disciplinary changes were made within the university, with the replacement of the study abroad program coordinator and the NRI hostel warden. The university has formed a foreign student advisory committee to address the concerns of international students, with plans to strengthen security across the campus.
Police authorities, including the Detection of Crime Branch, have arrested several individuals in connection to the attack, with details forthcoming in the investigation. Two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan were hospitalized following the incident, which sparked outrage within the international student community.
The attack has prompted Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi to convene meetings with law enforcement agencies to ensure decisive action is taken against all involved parties. Reports indicate that the Gujarat University is home to around 300 international students from countries such as Afghanistan, Gandhi Dham, and African nations.
