Hawaii Battles UNLV in Crucial Mountain West Showdown
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors face the UNLV Rebels on Friday night in a pivotal matchup for the Mountain West Conference. Both teams are tied at 4-2 in conference play and need a win to strengthen their chances for a spot in the championship game. The game will take place at Allegiant Stadium at 7:30 p.m. local time.
Hawaii, with a record of 7-3, is looking to secure their second Mountain West championship game appearance since 2019. Meanwhile, UNLV sits at 8-2 and aims for a shot to play in the title game for the third consecutive year after failing to win the past two against Boise State.
“There’s a lot at stake,” Hawaii coach Timmy Chang remarked ahead of the game. “Two top teams in the Mountain West jockeying to be in that final game of the season.”
The Warriors lead the all-time series against the Rebels, 19-15, but struggles away from home have been a concern. They have not won against UNLV at Allegiant Stadium since it opened in 2020.
In their last encounter, Hawaii lost 29-27 but won the Island Showdown Trophy last season in Honolulu. This time, they aim to replicate that success on the Rebels’ turf.
UNLV’s roster includes notable stars like quarterback Anthony Colandrea, who has thrown for over 2,500 yards this season. The Rebels are coming off a hard-fought 29-26 double-overtime victory against Utah State. Coach Dan Mullen has quickly made his mark, leading the team to a strong season despite a coaching change.
Both teams are fueled by talented players, with Hawaii’s Micah Alejado also having a standout season under center, bringing a dynamic offensive approach for the Warriors. Their matchup should be one of the most exciting showdowns of the year.
The importance of Friday’s game cannot be overstated. With only one week left after this matchup, the outcome could determine if either team remains in contention for the championship. As Hawai’i prepares for the challenge, the players’ focus is clear.
“It’s just another game at a different field,” said UH receiver Tama Uiliata. “We need to stay grounded and stick to our mission of winning.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Allegiant Stadium, and fans expect an electric atmosphere.
