Heavy Snowfall Causes Flight Cancellations And Delays At Vancouver International Airport

Officials at Vancouver’s airport are currently dealing with the aftermath of heavy snowfall, which has resulted in multiple flight cancellations and delays. Since Tuesday night, approximately 20 centimetres of snow has accumulated, causing significant disruptions to air travel at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport, as the situation is being closely monitored. A winter storm is currently affecting southwest B.C., with an additional 20 centimetres of snow projected to fall between Tuesday night and Thursday.

In response to the adverse weather conditions, crews at YVR are working tirelessly to clear runways and de-ice planes to ensure safe departures. However, the inclement weather necessitates additional safety checks, resulting in delayed and cancelled flights.

YVR spokesperson Alyssa Smith emphasized the importance of prioritizing passenger safety and stated, ‘We are managing the number of arriving and departing flights based on the weather conditions. Our teams are working diligently to minimize disruptions and ensure the smooth operation of the airport.’

As of noon, approximately 80 percent of flights were still operational, with ongoing efforts to manage the situation. Passengers are advised to stay updated on their flight status through their respective airlines before making their way to the airport.

Flight cancellations and delays were not only limited to Vancouver International Airport; other airports in the province, such as Victoria International Airport, Kelowna International Airport, and Kamloops Airport, also experienced similar issues due to the heavy snowfall.
