TOLUCA, Mexico — Mexican midfielder Héctor Herrera, known as “El Zorro,” has made a surprising move to Toluca FC, marking his return to Liga MX after 12 years playing abroad. The 34-year-old veteran, who previously starred for Pachuca and Porto, joined the Diablos Rojos in a high-profile transfer ahead of the Clausura 2025 season.

Herrera revealed that the move began as a joke during a conversation with Toluca’s sporting director, Antonio Naelson “Sinha,” at a Leagues Cup match last year. “It all started with a casual chat with Sinha. We joked about me coming to Toluca, and then my name was put on the table. When I didn’t renew with Houston, the approach became serious,” Herrera said during a press conference.

The midfielder emphasized his excitement about joining Toluca, particularly under the guidance of head coach Antonio “El Turco” Mohamed. “I started talking with them before Mohamed arrived, and that made the move even more attractive. He’s a coach with a lot of experience, and I’m happy to be here,” Herrera added.

Herrera, who has 95 caps for the Mexican national team, expressed his focus on contributing to Toluca’s success rather than chasing another call-up to the national squad. “At this stage of my life, I’m calm and not thinking about things that may or may not happen. I’m living in the present and enjoying it my way,” he said.

The veteran midfielder highlighted the growing quality of Liga MX, noting the influx of players with experience in top European leagues. “The level of the league keeps improving. There are quality players who have played in major leagues, and that’s great for Mexican football. It helps the league, the country, and the national team grow,” Herrera stated.

Herrera’s arrival bolsters a Toluca squad already considered one of the most competitive in Liga MX. The team, led by Mohamed, is aiming for the Clausura 2025 title. “We have a young, talented team with great quality on and off the field. I can bring experience, composure, and possession to help my teammates in attack,” Herrera said.

The midfielder also praised the club’s environment and fanbase. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the club, the city, and the fans. They’re the most important thing to me right now, and I want to help the team achieve its goals,” he added.

Herrera’s return to Liga MX comes after a successful stint in Europe, where he became a key figure for Porto and later played for Atlético Madrid and Houston Dynamo. His experience and leadership are expected to play a crucial role in Toluca’s quest for silverware this season.
