Hideki Matsuyama Sets PGA Tour Record with 35-Under Win at The Sentry
Hideki Matsuyama opened the 2025 PGA Tour season with a historic performance, finishing at 35-under par to set a new scoring record at The Sentry. The Japanese star secured a three-shot victory over Collin Morikawa, capping off a dominant week at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii.
Matsuyama’s 35-under 257 total broke the previous 72-hole scoring record of 34-under, set at Kapalua in 2022. He also set a new mark for most holes of birdie or better in a tournament, with 35, surpassing the previous record of 34. His final-round 65 included a hole-out eagle from 107 yards on the third hole, which helped him maintain control throughout the day.
“I’m so happy that it went in,” Matsuyama said of his final birdie putt, which sealed the record. “That last putt, it felt like if I make it, then it’s going to be the record.”
Morikawa, who started the final round one shot behind Matsuyama, struggled with his putting early, recording consecutive three-putts on the fifth and sixth holes. Despite a late charge with birdies on the 14th and 15th, Morikawa couldn’t close the gap, finishing at 32-under 260.
Matsuyama’s victory marked his 11th PGA Tour win and his third in the last 10 months. The $3.6 million prize pushed his career earnings past $60 million. He now heads to the Sony Open in Honolulu, where he will aim to join Justin Thomas and Ernie Els as the only players to win both Hawaii events in the same season.
Other notable performances included Taylor Pendrith‘s albatross on the par-5 fifth hole, the first in tournament history at Kapalua. Sungjae Im finished third at 30-under, while Chris Kirk and Byeong Hun An also delivered strong showings.
Matsuyama’s record-breaking week was fueled by a last-minute switch to a center-shafted putter, which he credited for his exceptional performance on the greens. “I’m not sure why it worked so well,” he said, “but it went in.”
