Holland’s Tulip Time Festival Blooms with Dutch Culture and Entertainment

HOLLAND, MI — The 96th annual Tulip Time Festival begins on Friday, May 2, and runs through Sunday, May 11. This beloved event showcases the vibrant Dutch traditions of Holland, alongside millions of blooming tulips.
The festival features a stunning array of tulips throughout downtown, Windmill Island, and Veldheer Tulip Farm. Visitors can admire thousands of tulips lining the streets and gardens, perfect for photo opportunities, family portraits, or picking bulbs to plant at home.
Parades are a highlight of the Tulip Time Festival. The iconic Kinderparade starts with a ceremonial white glove inspection, a warm greeting to festival-goers, inspired by traditional Dutch customs. Both main parades follow the same route, starting at Columbia and 8th Street, ending at 11th and VanRaalte past Kollen Park.
Another traditional event is Dutch Dancing, celebrating its 90th year as a staple at Tulip Time. This year, the festival introduced the De Familiedans, which invites families and young children to join in. Daily performances feature around 860 dancers, highlighting the event’s community spirit.
Adding to the festivities is a carnival, offering rides and classic fair foods. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult while enjoying the rides, promoting safety throughout the event.
For visitors interested in unique tulip experiences, Pella‘s annual tulip festival takes place simultaneously, marking its 90th anniversary. Alie Muller-Heit, owner of a local flower market, shared her excitement about the festival. She recalls how her family has been involved in the Pella Tulip Time since the beginning.
This year, the flower market offers blooming tulips and bulbs in special gift bags. Visitors can also attend free classes on tulip care, ensuring they can grow and enjoy these stunning flowers long after the festival.
Tulip Time is not just a festival, but a celebration of community, heritage, and the enduring joy of tulips in Holland, Michigan.
