STILLWATER, Okla. — Houston quarterback Conner Weigman threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, leading the Cougars to a 39-17 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday. Houston improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12.

The game took a turn in the second quarter when Weigman completed 21 of 30 passes for 306 yards without an interception. His two scoring passes came on consecutive drives, helping Houston establish a 24-10 halftime lead.

Houston’s Matthew Golden contributed with both a rushing and receiving touchdown, in addition to kicking four field goals. Coach Willie Fritz praised his team’s effort following a previous loss to Texas Tech, stating, “It was great we had an opportunity to come out and play better.”

Oklahoma State, on the other hand, struggled under interim coach Doug Meacham, falling to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the Big 12. Converted wide receiver Sam Jackson started at quarterback due to injuries, completing 7 of 16 passes for just 84 yards and an interception.

With 7:40 remaining in the game, Noah Walters replaced Jackson and led a 75-yard scoring drive, capped off with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Freeman. Meacham expressed disappointment in his team’s performance, saying, “It’s just kind of awkward or odd, like, we come out and hit some plays…and then it just kind of spirals.”

Oklahoma State struck first with a creative double pass trick play, where Jackson connected with Rodney Fields for a 63-yard touchdown. However, the Cougars quickly responded, driving 67 yards and scoring to tie the game.

Despite the initial excitement, Oklahoma State’s defense continued to struggle, allowing Houston to find success on numerous big plays throughout the game. The Cowboys managed only 225 total yards while allowing Houston to gain 485 yards.

The Cowboys will look to bounce back next week, hosting Cincinnati on Oct. 18, as they attempt to overcome a challenging season.
