Illinois Residents to Vote on New State Flag Designs: 10 Finalists Revealed
Illinois is on the verge of potentially adopting a new state flag, and residents will have a say in the decision. On Tuesday, December 10, the Illinois Flag Commission unveiled the 10 finalists from a statewide contest that drew thousands of submissions.
The finalists showcase a variety of designs, each with its own unique meaning and symbolism. One of the designs features 21 red and white horizontal stripes, representing Illinois as the 21st state admitted into the Union. Another design includes a blue field with a six-pointed white star, symbolizing the state’s rich history and geography.
Some designs incorporate elements that reflect Illinois’ natural features, such as a large blue stripe representing Lake Michigan and smaller blue stripes symbolizing the state’s various rivers, including the Mississippi and the Illinois.
Starting in January, Illinois residents will be able to vote on these designs or choose to keep the current flag. The voting results will be submitted to state lawmakers, who will then cast their own votes to determine the fate of the state flag.
The public can view the 10 finalist designs and prepare to cast their votes next month. This initiative marks a significant opportunity for Illinois residents to participate in shaping the state’s visual identity.
