Indianapolis, IN – Riley Leonard, a former star at Fairhope High School, has taken on the role of backup quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts after an eye injury to Anthony Richardson during pregame warmups on Sunday.

Initially serving as the emergency third quarterback, Leonard shifted to the active roster as Daniel Jones‘ backup. “It’s not really how you want to get the job, right?” Leonard said in the Colts’ locker room on Wednesday. “You want to really earn it. But that’s just the nature of this league; it’s kind of next man up. Praying for AR, obviously. I think he’s in really good spirits and hopefully recovering well.”

With Richardson placed on injured reserve, he is expected to miss at least four games. The Colts subsequently signed Brett Rypien to their practice squad. Leonard accepted the change in role, stating, “Still a backup, but just one play away now instead of two. But nothing really changes for me. I kind of operate the same.”

Colts coach echoed the team’s confidence in Leonard. “I think Riley’s come in with the right mindset from Day 1, the way he works and prepares. This is a great opportunity for him this week,” he said.

Jones noted Leonard’s progress since being drafted in the sixth round from Notre Dame. “He’s a smart guy, very talented. It’s been fun watching him grow,” he stated. “I think he’ll be ready to roll on Sunday.”

Leonard has a notable background, having played at both Duke and Notre Dame where he threw for impressive yardage and touchdowns. He was also recognized in high school for his achievements on the football and basketball teams.

“You never wish anything upon the starter,” Leonard said. “But if I were to go into the game, hopefully, it’s because we’re winning by a lot or something like that.”

The Colts are scheduled to face the Los Angeles Chargers at 3:05 p.m. CDT at SoFi Stadium. With their current roster adjustments, Leonard will play a crucial role in the game.
