IndyCar Shifts to Fox Sports in Bid for Broader Reach and Growth

Indycar Fox Sports Partnership

IndyCar is set to undergo a significant change in its broadcasting partnership, moving from NBC Sports to Fox Sports starting next year. This strategic move is designed to enhance the series’ visibility and reach a wider audience, rather than prioritizing immediate financial gains.

According to IndyCar CEO Mark Miles, the decision was made to accept a less financially rewarding agreement in exchange for greater exposure. “We did not pursue the arrangement that would have provided us with the highest rights fee,” Miles stated. “This agreement was economically sensible, but more importantly, it offers a significantly broader reach.”

The new deal with Fox Sports is valued at $25 million per year, a 25% increase from the $20 million IndyCar received from NBC. While this amount is modest compared to other major motorsport series like Formula 1 and NASCAR, IndyCar views this collaboration as a valuable investment in the sport’s growth.

Fox Sports plans to streamline IndyCar broadcasts, ensuring all 17 race events, including the Indianapolis 500, are aired on a single primary channel for greater consistency. The network also intends to enhance visual presentation and graphics, and will feature familiar broadcasting personalities like James Hinchcliffe. Additionally, Fox Deportes will provide exclusive Spanish-language broadcasts to cater to the expanding Mexican fanbase.

The partnership includes plans for cross-promotion, such as integrating IndyCar promotions into major network events like the Super Bowl in New Orleans. This alignment with Fox’s other motorsport assets is expected to solidify IndyCar’s position within the U.S. motorsport broadcasting domain.

Despite an overall uptick in viewership this past season, IndyCar remains focused on improving the consistency of race exposure and bolstering engagement and partnerships. The broader effects of this increased visibility are yet to be fully realized, but the move is seen as a step towards sustainable growth for the series.
