Injury Concerns Loom Over Miami’s Key Players Ahead of Stanford Showdown
Miami Gardens, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes are facing injury concerns as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday. Defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor, part of Miami’s dynamic edge rushing duo, is questionable to play after sustaining an ankle injury during last Friday’s game against Louisville.
Mesidor was seen in a boot on his right ankle during practice on Monday, raising alarms among coaches and fans alike. Head coach Mario Cristobal commented on the situation in a press conference, expressing concern for his star player but also conveying optimism for his long-term recovery. “Obviously, it was tough for him to finish the game,” Cristobal said. “He was a little bit banged up, but he seems to be on track to be healing.”
Along with Mesidor, tight end Jack Nickel, who is the older brother of freshman quarterback Luke Nickel, has also been ruled out for the game. The injury report lists a number of players for Miami, but Mesidor’s status is by far the most significant concern for the team.
In Mesidor’s potential absence, other players like sophomore Armondo Blount and Marquise Lightfoot are expected to step up. Both have shown promise during limited playtime this season, particularly Lightfoot, who has made notable impacts on the field. “Lightfoot should get most of the snaps against the Cardinal and explode on the scene tonight,” said a Hurricanes source.
On the other hand, the Stanford Cardinal will also be dealing with their share of injury issues. Leading rusher Micah Ford is confirmed out for Saturday’s matchup, along with safety Jay Green, who contributes defensively with 28 tackles this season. However, quarterback Ben Gulbranson, who missed parts of the previous game, is listed as probable and may return to lead the Cardinal.
The Hurricanes are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to unranked Louisville, which ended their 10-game home winning streak. With the stakes high for Miami, both teams are aiming for a strong performance as they battle it out at Hard Rock Stadium this weekend.
The matchup is set for a 7:00 p.m. ET kickoff and will be broadcast on ESPN.
