SEATTLE, Wash. – The long-standing rivalry between the Washington State Cougars and the Washington Huskies has found a new setting at Lumen Field. The Cougars, aiming to maintain their undefeated streak, faced off against the Huskies in a thrilling contest, characterized by intense gameplay and strategic maneuvers from both teams.
The game commenced with an impressive 33-yard punt return by Tony Freeman, positioning the Cougars at Washington’s 29-yard line. Despite initial struggles, the Cougars managed a 44-yard field goal, securing an early lead. As the first quarter progressed, the Huskies swiftly retaliated. Quarterback Will Rogers connected with Giles Jackson for a 31-yard touchdown pass, shifting the score to 7-3 in favor of Washington.
Not to be outdone, Washington State promptly answered with an 8-play drive, greatly aided by a pass interference penalty. This placed them within striking distance of the Huskies’ end zone. Quarterback John Mateer capitalized on the opportunity, executing a scramble for a touchdown. The first quarter concluded with Washington State leading 10-7.
The contest continued with both teams showcasing mixed offensive strategies. Washington managed to tie the game with a 44-yard field goal by Grady Gross. During the second quarter, the Huskies edged ahead with another field goal, but the Cougars responded vigorously. Mateer connected with Tony Freeman for a critical 38-yard pass, followed by a 25-yard touchdown run, concluding the half with Washington State ahead 17-13.
Throughout the first half, John Mateer maintained a notable performance, completing 12 out of 24 passes for 182 yards. His ability to run was particularly significant, as he rushed for 44 yards and secured two touchdowns. On the receiving end, Josh Meredith stood out with 74 receiving yards. Meanwhile, the Huskies excelled in passing with Giles Jackson achieving 101 yards on five receptions.
As rainfall began during halftime, Washington shifted to a more run-heavy strategy, even though their initial third-quarter drive concluded with a field goal by Grady Gross. The Huskies narrowed the lead, bringing the score to 17-16 with a continued focus on ground attacks.
