Irv Smith Jr. Houston Texans Tight End

HOUSTON, Texas — Former Alabama standout Irv Smith Jr. has re-signed with the Houston Texans on a one-year contract, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday. This marks a significant moment for Smith as he rejoins the Texans, adding to a lineup that already includes several former Alabama players.

Smith, who was a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, spent the 2024 season with Houston. During his tenure, he played in only five regular-season games without posting any offensive statistics. However, he did make one reception for two yards during the playoffs. Over his career, Smith has played a total of 54 games, recording 109 receptions for 973 yards and 10 touchdowns across multiple teams, including the Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals.

The Texans’ roster now boasts six former Alabama players, including receiver John Metchie III, offensive tackle Cam Robinson, linebacker Will Anderson Jr., linebacker Christian Harris, and linebacker Henry To'oTo'o. The team is also coached by former Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans, creating a strong connection to the Auburn University program.

Smith’s re-signing comes as the NFL offseason is in full swing, with teams evaluating their rosters and gearing up for the 2025 NFL Draft. The Texans will hope that Smith can contribute more significantly this season, building upon his playoff experience and his professional career’s accomplishments.

As the league continues to evolve, Smith’s ability to adapt and improve will be paramount to his success with the Texans. His journey from a promising college player to an NFL veteran reflects the dynamic nature of professional football.
