Islanders Weigh Options on Noah Dobson Amid Contract Talks

Elmont, NY – The New York Islanders are exploring their options with young star defenceman Noah Dobson, who is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1. Dobson, 25, is currently under a three-year, $12 million contract that will expire soon.
Sources indicate that Dobson is seeking a new contract worth up to $11 million annually, depending on the length of the deal. Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche is in talks with Dobson’s representatives, aiming to finalize an agreement. However, the club is also assessing potential trade possibilities.
Several teams have shown interest in Dobson, including the Utah Mammoth, St. Louis Blues, Columbus Blue Jackets, and San Jose Sharks. Trade discussions are expected to persist until either Dobson signs a new contract with the Islanders or Darche agrees to a noteworthy trade.
The Islanders approach the 2025-26 season with about $21 million in salary cap space, offering some flexibility. In addition to discussions about Dobson, they are also considering trade options for centre Jean-Gabriel Pageau, whose contract is set to expire next year. Pageau has a $5 million cap hit and a 16-team no-trade list, giving him some control over his future.
Last season, Pageau played 79 games, achieving 14 goals and 28 assists for a total of 42 points. Dobson contributed similarly, recording 10 goals and 29 assists in 71 games as the Islanders prepare for their upcoming draft.
