Jackson, NJ Wildfire Forces Evacuations, Burns 175 Acres
A significant wildfire in Jackson Township, New Jersey, has led to the evacuation of several homes and threatened numerous structures. The fire, which began on Wednesday afternoon in the area of South Stump Tavern Road, has burned approximately 175 acres of land and is currently 20% contained, according to officials.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service reported that six homes on the west side of Stump Tavern Road were evacuated, with voluntary evacuations advised for the east side. In total, 25 structures are threatened by the blaze.
Firefighters are employing various tactics to combat the fire, including backfiring operations to slow its advance and protect homes. Fire engines, bulldozers, ground crews, and a helicopter are all involved in the firefighting efforts.
The fire is the latest in a series of major wildfires in New Jersey, with seven significant fires occurring since mid-October. The dry conditions, which have persisted since September, have heightened the fire danger across the state, with burn restrictions in effect.
South Stump Tavern Road remains closed from Route 571 to Route 528 in Jackson Township. The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation center at the Jackson Senior Center for affected residents.
No injuries have been reported, and no homes have been damaged thus far. However, the Forest Fire Service continues to urge caution due to the ongoing drought and the risk posed by gusty winds.
The cause of the wildfire is still under investigation.
