Jacob Rodriguez Shines as Key Player for Texas Tech Red Raiders

LUBBOCK, Texas — Jacob Rodriguez‘s journey from a walk-on quarterback to a standout linebacker is inspiring. The defensive captain of the Texas Tech Red Raiders has emerged as a key player in their successful season, boasting an 8-1 overall record and a 5-1 conference standing. Rodriguez is one of the 12 semifinalists for the prestigious Butkus Award.

The road to this achievement was not easy for Rodriguez. Initially a 3-star quarterback recruit in Virginia, he struggled to find his place during his freshman year. Following a series of coaching changes, he made the tough decision to move to Texas without a scholarship. This transition brought numerous hardships, including sleeping on the floor of his brother’s apartment and taking out loans for basic living expenses.

Despite these challenges, Rodriguez remained focused and determined, eventually earning a scholarship from Texas Tech head coach Joey Maguire after one semester. “Me and my family have been welcomed with open arms, and I love Lubbock and everything that has to do with it,” Rodriguez said.

This season, Rodriguez has excelled as a linebacker, recording 74 tackles, one sack, seven forced fumbles, and one interception. This impressive performance has placed him among the top three contenders for the Heisman Trophy, which is typically awarded to quarterbacks.

Rodriguez’s influence expands beyond the field, as he has benefited from Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals since college sports began transitioning into this new era. He described the evolution of NIL as “surreal” and acknowledged the positive impact it has had on his family’s life.

His major NIL sponsor is the Matador Club, founded by alum Cody Campbell in 2022, which provides financial support to athletes in exchange for community service. Additionally, Rodriguez signed with the South Plains Food Bank in May 2024, highlighting his commitment to local initiatives.

As the 2026 NFL Draft approaches, Jacob Rodriguez demonstrates the significant impact of NIL deals, allowing players like him to focus on their game while establishing themselves on and off the field.
