Ian Cunningham Chicago Bears Assistant Gm

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly targeting Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham to fill their vacant GM position after firing Trent Baalke on Wednesday. The move comes as the Jaguars aim to rebuild their front office following a tumultuous period under Baalke.

Cunningham, who was a finalist for the Tennessee Titans‘ GM job earlier this offseason, is now a top candidate for the Jaguars. According to Mia O'Brien of 1010XL, the Jaguars’ flagship radio station, there is “mutual interest” between Cunningham and the franchise. The Jaguars recently hired Liam Coen as their head coach, and securing Cunningham would complete a significant overhaul of their leadership.

If Cunningham lands the job, the Bears would receive two third-round compensatory draft picks over the next two years under the NFL‘s minority hiring incentive program. Cunningham has been a key figure in Chicago’s front office, helping shape the team’s roster during a critical rebuilding phase.

Jacksonville presents an intriguing opportunity for Cunningham. The team boasts a talented young quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, a manageable salary cap situation, and the No. 5 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Additionally, the Jaguars play in the AFC South, a division that has been relatively weak in recent years.

However, the Jaguars’ recent instability could be a concern. Baalke’s tenure was marked by controversy, and owner Shad Khan has a history of retaining GMs despite mixed results. Cunningham would inherit a franchise in transition, but one with the potential for rapid improvement.

For the Bears, losing Cunningham would be a significant blow. He has been instrumental in their recent roster decisions, and his departure would leave a void in the front office. Jeff King, the team’s co-director of player personnel, is seen as the likely successor if Cunningham departs.

Cunningham has interviewed for GM positions in each of the past two hiring cycles, signaling his readiness for a top role. Whether he lands in Jacksonville or not, his rising stock underscores his value to the Bears and the broader NFL community.
