ROME, Italy — Jannik Sinner made a strong comeback to tennis on Saturday, defeating Argentina’s Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Italian Open. This marked Sinner’s first match since serving a three-month doping ban.

The world’s top-ranked player, Sinner ended his suspension by settling with the World Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for the banned substance clostebol. The ban was accepted due to accidental contamination by his physiotherapist’s treatment.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I have waited quite long for this moment,” Sinner said after the match. “I am very happy to be back.” His victory against Navone extended his winning streak to 22 matches, dating back to October.

Playing in front of a supportive crowd at Campo Centrale, Sinner quickly regained his competitive edge, breaking for 3-1 in the first set and earning cheers from the audience. “The crowd was incredible,” Sinner remarked. “They always give me strength to continue even in tough times.”

Despite some doubts about his form after the suspension, Sinner continued to show skill on the court, hitting more winners than Navone. However, he acknowledged some unforced errors, particularly with his forehand.

As the match progressed, Sinner faced challenges but ultimately dominated the court. He expressed gratitude for the support he received, which he felt enhanced his performance. “The whole match, even when it seems quite comfortable, it’s a rollercoaster,” he explained.

Sinner’s next opponent will be Jesper de Jong, who stunned the competition to enter the third round as a lucky loser. With the countdown to the French Open starting, Sinner aims to build on this match and further sharpen his skills.

“Hopefully I can play here one or two matches more to see where I am at,” Sinner said. “It was a great start from my point of view of this tournament and of the comeback.”
