Jets Sign Edge Rusher Rashad Weaver to One-Year Deal

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have signed edge rusher Rashad Weaver to a one-year contract, bolstering their defensive line as the team faces a critical offseason. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported the agreement on March 12, 2025, marking the Jets’ first transaction since a flurry of early free-agency activity that included quarterback Justin Fields and cornerback additions.
Weaver, 27, previously played for the Tennessee Titans, where he was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. His tenure in Tennessee produced modest numbers, with 5.5 sacks in 36 games, including 16 appearances last season. However, his 2023 campaign saw a significant decline in playing time and performance, as Weaver registered no sacks and struggled with run defense, missing 20% of his tackle attempts.
The Jets are eager to reinforce their pass rush after last season’s struggles, especially while they await the complete recovery of Jermaine Johnson, who suffered an Achilles injury. Additionally, draft picks Will McDonald and Micheal Clemons are among those competing for edge rusher roles.
Before signing with the Jets, Weaver was cut from the Tennessee Titans’ roster, subsequently joining the Houston Texans’ practice squad. He participated in three games for Texas without recording any statistics. His career trajectory then took him to the Los Angeles Rams, where he finished the season.
“The Jets are hoping to get back the version of Weaver that performed well in 2022,” Pelissero tweeted. The organization aims to capitalize on his potential while addressing the depth of their edge-rush unit, which ranked among the least effective in the NFL last season.
Despite questions about Weaver’s prior performance and his viability at this point in his career, the New York Jets continue to seek low-cost and low-risk acquisitions. As offseason workouts begin, it remains uncertain whether Weaver will secure a spot on the final 53-man roster.
“He’s likely just a minimum-contract player at this stage, competing for a roster position,” said a source close to the team.
Each addition, regardless of perception, reflects the Jets’ strategic attempts to reconfigure their lineup ahead of the upcoming season, fostering a competitive environment for all players.
